Been invited to session with the team but are having problems getting Google Meet to work? Here are some tips & tricks...
The first thing to check is that you are using Google Chrome as your web-browser. Google Meet works in Firefox and other browsers, but Google Chrome is best.
Your camera or microphone doesn't seem to be working
If you can see and hear us, but we can't see and hear you then it could be one of the following...
Check you are not on mute or have turned off your camera
Roll over the main window and the control bar will show
If either the Mic or Camera icons are red, simply click on them to turn them on
They should look like this:
Google Meet doesn't have permission to use your camera or mic
When you first join a Google Meet conference, the system will ask permission to use your camera and microphone. If you accidentally denied the system follow these steps:
2: Click the + Join or start a meeting button and just click Continue when asked for a meeting name.
3: In the address bar on Chrome, click the Camera Blocked icon (a small camera with a red X).
4: Click Always Allow https://meet.google.com to Access Your Camera and Microphone.
5: Click Done. Refresh the webpage to see that your camera and microphone have been granted access and are now working.
If you are using Firefox then the camera icon is on the left of the website address - as with Chrome just click on the X and refresh the page
This time when asked make sure to Allow permission. You can also set Remember this decision so you don't need to Allow each time
Google Meet is using the wrong camera or mic
Google Meet has a setting icon where you can check you have selected the right camera and microphone and test your settings.
Roll you mouse over the main Google Hangout window and click on the three dots to open the settings pop-up menu
Then you can choose Settings from the pop-up menu
Here you can check you have the right Microphone, Speakers and Video selected
If you speak into your Microphone you should see the little green bars on the far right move
Something else is using your camera or mic
Sometimes other applications such as Zoom, do not allow Google Meet to access the camera and microphone. Try this:
- close down all applications/programs you have open
- re-open just your web-browser
- try the Google Meet link again
Problem: People can’t see your camera when on MacOS
On the latest versions of MacOS (Mojave and later), you need to permit Chrome or Firefox to use your webcam. This is a security measure to ensure no unapproved applications are using your webcam or microphone when they should not.
Note: Before following these steps, check that your camera is plugged in properly. If you can access your webcam in other apps, such as FaceTime or Photobooth, continue.
1: Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
2: Select System Preferences.
3: Select the Security & Privacy setting.
4: Choose Privacy > Camera.
5: Ensure that either Google Chrome or Firefox has a check next to it.
Note: You can follow these same steps if your microphone is denied. During step 4, select the Microphone option instead of the Camera option.
Did that work?
